Introduction
In this chapter, you learned about
African Americans' struggle during the 1950s and 1960s for greater
civil rights. Through their determination and mostly nonviolent
efforts, African American men and women achieved greater status
in American society. But that achievement did not come easily.
African American demonstrators often met with violence from
whitesas they did during one of the more famous civil
