"A Growing Population"

Introduction
     In this chapter, you learned about the settlement and growth of the English colonies in North America. Unlike France's North American holdings—which were sparsely populated trading posts—England's colonies became permanent and well-populated settlements. Throughout the 1600s and 1700s, these colonies grew more populated as families grew and more settlers arrived. Go to the Internet for a closer look at population trends of England's North American colonies.

  • Analyze the chart, then answer the following questions.
1. What was the total estimated population of the colonies in 1630? By 1780, how much had it increased?


2. What was the most populous colony in 1780? Which colony was second?


3. In which part of the country did most Africans reside? Why?


4. Choose a colony and imagine that you are in charge of its tourism and promotion. Create a brochure or leaflet encouraging people to settle in your colony. Use information from the chapter to highlight your colony's attributes.
