"A Growing Population"

Introduction
Students have learned about the growth of England's North American colonies. In this lesson, students will examine more closely the colonies' population trends.

Lesson Description
Students will use information from the charts to answer questions about the population growth of the colonies. They will then create a brochure or pamphlet encouraging people to settle in a particular colony.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will be able to read a population chart accurately and answer questions about the data contained on the chart.
2. Students will use their knowledge of colonial America to create a promotional brochure for one of the colonies.

Student Web Activity Answers
1. The estimated population was 4,646 in 1630; by 1780 it had grown to 2,780,369. This is an increase of 2,775,723.
2. Virginia; Pennsylvania
3. the South; the South's plantation economy was based largely on slave labor.
4. Accept all reasonable brochures. Students' work should be accurate and show an understanding of the material.
